🎥 Why Hormones Like Insulin Are Key to Weight Loss – Not Just Calories!

In this eye-opening video, we explore the science behind weight loss and explain why insulin is a far more important factor than just counting calories. If you’ve been struggling to lose weight despite reducing your calorie intake, this video will show you why understanding your hormones is the missing piece to achieving your goals.

🔑 Key Takeaways:
🌟 Learn how insulin affects fat storage and how it can prevent weight loss even when you're eating fewer calories.
🌟 Discover why cutting calories alone isn’t enough, and why intermittent fasting and low-carb diets work by lowering insulin levels.
🌟 Understand which foods trigger insulin spikes and how sugar, refined carbs, and processed foods make weight loss harder.
🌟 Find out which low-insulin foods can help you burn fat efficiently without reducing your metabolic rate.

💡 Why This Video Matters: Stop wasting time with ineffective calorie counting! If you’re serious about weight loss, it’s time to focus on hormonal health. Understanding how insulin works can transform your approach to nutrition and help you burn fat more efficiently.

Doc I was diabetic since I was 13 years old .. doctors put me on insulin.. after that I started gaining more weight and I was told I’ll be insulin dependent.. after watching your videos I have my sugars in control and on medication now doctors have stopped insulin.. now I’m 28 years old .. half of my life I was worried about this is insulin injections

    • @alexanderu4208 says:

@@samruddhikale9916Dr Ben bikman explains in his book , that when sugar is high , insulin production increases to be able to bring down the sugar levels. After a long period like that , the body starts to become insulin resistance which means it won’t allow the insulin to “burn” the sugar, so the insulin production goes even higher and crazier until you become high in glucose (sugar) and high in insulin and that’s when you become diabetic. Now , dr Ben is wondering what’s the reason doctors will give you more insulin if the only thing you actually need to do is bring your glucose levels down and stop insulin resistance and become insulin sensitive again and the diabetes will go bye bye..

Thank you, Dr. Fung. You’ve truly changed my life. While I’ve never had weight issues, I struggled with depression and neglected my eating habits. Over time, I developed joint pain, arthritis, and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia over a year ago. At 44, I considered myself healthy—until I wasn’t. That’s when I discovered water fasting, and I can’t even begin to describe how much it’s helped me. I’ve done 5-day and 10-day fasts, and more regularly, 3- or 4-day fasts. My doctor was amazed by how much I lowered my cholesterol, but he was skeptical when I told him about fasting. Despite his reservations, I refused medication because I feel so much better now.

      Thank you for everything!

I tried the keto diet and I craved carbs all the time. I couldn’t stay on the keto diet. I found the Mayo Clinic Diet book by Donald Hensrud. This book taught how to measure calories in foods so that you will lose weight. This book also taught to have a serving of fruit (my favorite is a cup of cantaloupe) and a nonstarchy vegetable with every meal. This book also taught to eat unrefined carbs, like steel cut oats instead of instant oats. I lost weight following this diet and have kept most of the weight off since 2021. I weigh myself every day to ensure I am not gaining weight back. I now do intermittent fasting having two meals a day and sometimes one meal a day especially if I am going to a restaurant and eating a lot of calories for one meal. I don’t follow the diet as religiously as I did when I first used it to lose weight and have more fat in the diet and more refined carbs than recommended, but I still measure calories to ensure I am not overeating calories way too much. I also only eat one meal a day sometimes when I have overeaten calories on another day. Weighing myself daily helps ensure I am not gaining too much weight. I also do one meal a day when I want to lose the extra weight I see on the scale.

    • @SimplyHuman186 says:

No. Insulin normalization is much more important to release fat, then counting calories.

    • @michelep.7249 says:

@@SimplyHuman186Read Proteinaholic by Garth Davis, a gastric bypass surgeon. All of his patients have tried the keto diet, but none of them were able to stay on the keto diet longterm. Also read Mastering Diabetes book by Cyrus Khambatta, a person with a master’s degree in nutrition sciences and a type 1 diabetic. In this book, Khambatta teaches the dangers of being on a keto diet and teaches how a diet very low in fat causes him to require less insulin per gram of carbohydrate he eats.

When the “body slows its metabolic rate” how does it do this? What metabolic functions does it not do? What specific consequences does this have on the body? For instance does it slow synthesis of new cells? Or does it ‘slow’ the burn of energy? Can you expand more on what I means for the body to “slow its metabolic rate” and what important body functions are not carried out because of this?

    • @IJandoDk says:

The body will do things such as deprioritize non vital functionalities like hair and nail growth or make you sleep/remain still more.

  • @msromike123 says:

Such an important concept that is misunderstood by so many. Unfortunately this includes some physicians and many dieticians. All I know, is I lost 70 lbs from a high of 228 lbs by following these fairly easy to implement guidelines. One of the PAs was worried about me being too “skinny” even when my weight is smack dab in the middle of the normal BMI bracket. She was very concerned I was skipping meals. The sad thing is when obesity is so normalized that a healthcare provider feels that normal BMI is “too skinny.”

    • @ChadSharkeyNursePractitioner says:

@msromike123  Great work on your weight loss!!! The other part of that is that education is still focused on 3 meals per day PLUS snacks. So, most of the providers and dieticians are still preaching that information they were taught. The education needs to change.

    • @Hat65 says:

@@ChadSharkeyNursePractitionerI know people who are older that eat several small meals a day and they’re thin and healthy.😮

  • @rosaliadecuyper7013 says:

Thank you for this video! I started my diet 20/10/24. I am following 2MAD (eating twice a day) + also eating as natural as possible, no more processed foods and sugar. I now understand why many people struggle to lose weight. I also find it weird that most doctors/dieticians don’t tell patients this… Losing weight and maintaining the right mindset is also much easier now that I know how my body is working inside while I am fasting. Thanks for enlightening us with the right information Dr. Fung! 😊

    • @TorBoy9 says:

Please note that your body does not differentiate between “natural” or processed foods. High carb foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta, oatmeal are “all natural” but will still spike your glucose and therefore insulin. High sugar fruits such as bananas, mango are “all natural” but will also spike your glucose and therefore insulin. Look at all foods equally, whether highly processed or not, through the lens of high carbs/sugar.

Great content as always! I saw a patient today that was a type 2 diabetic on insulin. He was having frequent low blood sugars so the clinic nurse told him to eat a mid morning snack, mid afternoon snack and bedtime snack. His BMI was 48. What??? What are we doing? What about decreasing his insulin? We need to shift the care model.
