Fasting, Muscle Loss and Protein Needs – the facts | Jason Fung

💪 Does fasting burn muscle? Absolutely not! This video explains why fasting doesn’t lead to muscle loss and dives into how the body uses energy from stored fat and glucose rather than breaking down muscle. Dr. Jason Fung discusses the science behind muscle preservation during fasting, the role of protein, and how muscle growth is actually tied to exercise, not just protein intake.

Topics Covered:

How fasting impacts muscle mass
Why protein intake is important but often overestimated
Understanding muscle strength and energy during fasting
Studies on fasting and muscle strength improvement 🧪

Key Takeaways:
1️⃣ Fasting primarily uses fat and glucose, sparing muscle tissue
2️⃣ Muscular strength remains stable, even during long fasts
3️⃣ Overeating protein doesn’t necessarily build more muscle; exercise is essential 💪
4️⃣ Fasting may even improve heart muscle health after a heart attack ❤️

  • @femnotsofatale says:

This is SO helpful. I remember your blog post from several years ago addressing these protein needs. I’m 62 and receive a lot of information about how I need to up my protein. Whenever I go over 60 g per day – my Blood Glucose rises dramatically this next morning. I appreciate you sticking to your stance and stating it again – I have regained so much health, thanks to you and Megan.

  • @michelm288 says:

This is my 4th year without any diabetic medication due to Jason’s advice. Intermittent Fasting.

  • @iss8504 says:

Who else loves Dr Fung’s frank and very blunt way of explaining things? Very refreshing.

  • @bobrik335 says:

High Protein is one of the Biggest Myths of our Times ! Thnx Dr.Fung for confirming that too !

  • @drpjvarier says:

A much needed topic to be clearly explained. No one need to doubt it as it’s from a medical expert and that too explained with proof… He is just amazing🙏🙏

  • @perserverance333 says:

Thank you! Finally someone who gets it!!! I’m less hungry day to today with intermittent fasting.

  • @zhanna5827 says:

Everyone is talking about the protein now! I gave in… struggling to lose weight and build muscle, working out every day. Im going back to intermittent fasting and low carb, which worked best for me. Thank you, Dr Fung!

    • @Amanda_downunder says:

Hi zhanna – how many hrs do u fast ? and do u eat 2MAD ? do u eat veg ? fruit ? grains ? ty

    • @zhanna5827 says:

@Amanda_downunder  I feel my best physically and mentally eating 2 meals a day within 6 hour window. You can have a small snack in between if you want, but after a while, you don’t need it. Veggies , protein, berries, some other fruit on occasion, good fats.. A big salad for one meal and cooked veggies wirh protein for the second meal . I also get low carb tortillas if I want a wrap, which help me stick to the plan, or overnight protein oats. Definitely cut out sugar.
      Hope this helps .

    • @Amanda_downunder says:

@@zhanna5827 – yes, thank you; it is helpful. I have lack of discipline. “good fats” – is that avocado, olive oil, nuts ? for protein, u mean fish, poultry, red meat ? ty

    • @zhanna5827 says:

@Amanda_downunder  pretty much, but not limited to. With only 2 meals a day, we can make those plates look and taste good. Besides Dr Fung, I learned a lot from Sten Ekberg (he’s amazing at explaining things), book and podcasts by
Gin Stephens, Ben Bikman, and others. Keep it simple. Maybe, start with Becky Gillaspys 0123 strategy, which stands for 0 sugar, 1 big salad a day, 2 cups of cooked veggies, and stop eating 3 hours before bed. See what plan works best for you

    • @patrycja2696 says:

Check Dr Jack Kruse book and his easy protocols, cheap book.
You’ll loose all the weight you want

  • @doublecross1079 says:

Timing is perfect! I had great success in 2019 fasting and being consistent in a the gym. I felt amazing, was strong and healthy. Pandemic brought back some poor lifestyle habits, I have gained weight, lost muscle. I have been searching for ways to get back into a sustainable lifestyle again, and got caught up in the guru’s talking about not fasting, I have been forcing myself to eat multiple meals with tons of protein. Well, I gain more weight, and the changes in the gym are not better or worst than with fasting. So, I am happily back to a fasting routine and moderate protein, as I can maintain that and if fits my lifestyle!

  • @anette5468 says:

Thank you so much for clarifying this Dr Fung. My heart specialist told me to stop fasting as it would ruin my heart 🥹 but I will go back to fasting as it has done miracles for my health 👌🏻 bless you for your valuable time ❤

  • @Figurefitout says:

Thanks dr. Fung. This helps calm my mind.

  • @FireOElijahMC says:

Anything the FDA says I just do the opposite. I recommend reading “Health and Beauty Mastery” by Julian Bannet, that book is a real eye opener about shocking stuff health industry is doing! I completely changed my habits

  • @isabellelee2658 says:

Thanks for answering my protein questions. I was unsure about how much protein to eat and this video is a big help.
