The Real Reason You Can’t Lose Belly Fat After 40 (It’s Not Cortisol Alone)

In this episode, Chalene Johnson breaks down the real reason you can’t lose belly fat after 40, what’s happening inside your body as estrogen declines, and why common weight loss strategies can backfire. If you’ve been doing everything “right” and still feel stuck, this will finally make it make sense.

For women over 40, especially in perimenopause and menopause, losing belly fat isn’t just about calories or willpower. It’s about hormones, cortisol, and a specific type of fat most people don’t fully understand: visceral fat. And here’s the frustrating part… a lot of the advice women have been following for years can actually make it worse.

If you’re wondering:
Why am I gaining belly fat during menopause even when I eat healthy?
Why does dieting feel harder after 40?

You’re not alone, and there’s a real biological reason behind it.

Chalene explains how cortisol and estrogen interact to drive fat storage, why visceral fat behaves differently, and how stress, undereating, and even certain workouts can keep you stuck. She also shares a simpler, more effective approach to fat loss in midlife, including protein preloading, smarter movement, and targeted supplementation to support hormones and metabolism.

This isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what actually works for your body now.

💬 What’s one thing you’ve been doing that you thought would help… but might actually be backfiring?

  1. I’ve never been diagnosed, but someone with ADHD told me that she recognizes ADHD in me. I’ve always had signs/symptoms of ADHD (forgetfulness, lack of staying focused, trouble sitting still…) I even had a learning disability when I was a child. I am now 44.

  2. I have never been diagnosed, thank you, Lord because I would’ve been put on medication obviously, but yes, I become easily extracted and cannot focus. Sometimes, I can get started in many things and not finish them.

  3. Oh WOW l haven’t seen you for a while and so didn’t see the result of your face lifting.. it’s amazing !!!!! WOW lm impressed Mille BRAVOS to your surgeon and staff and you Charlene !!! 🎉🎉🎉😃🤩🙏🏼

  4. Holy Freaking Cow! 40 was pivotal, everything changed and it was more of a battle to keep a few pounds away, SO TRUE! And Chalene off the subject, THANK YOU for the Vanicream tip, I want to buy that by the 5 gallon bucket, unscented, makes my skin so unbelievably soft, that was a million dollar tip, thank you for all of your continued inspiration and help.

  5. Thank you! This sums up exactly what I am experiencing right now. I have been working out for nearly 25 years, super into natural health, play sports, and eat pretty well. All of a sudden…pants are tight and have a gut! WTH! I have never struggled with my weight. I’m so over doing all the things with no results!

  6. This is so helpful, love the ‘about’ approximation, getting too rigid backfires for me. I have really increased my protein and it has helped with, energy , satiation, and bones, too! I just hit this belly fat wall at 64. Thank you! ❤

  7. I’m learning how important your fiber is- hearing “nutritionist’s “- not a slight, just don’t know if they are truly nutritionist. A big push right now is to get that first (fiber). A big way I am that is beans(I am not a vegan- at all). But a lot of data coming out that beans naturally turn on your glp-1 (?). I am about to be 59, post menopause and have NEVER had such an issue with weight until my 50’s. Can you do a video on fiber and how to balance it with protein? Some influencers are saying fiber is more important- Make it make sense 😅. Thanks for your content!

  8. I’m 59. I weigh 100 pounds. I feel like I’m thicker around the middle than when I was younger. I have to be so strict to get it really flat. But then when I do that, I get higher cortisol, and I can’t sleep. So I’m so confused!!!

  9. I would love to see some of your favorite recipes. I am turning 61 this year and have always been active and physically fit. I started having sleep issues in December and have gradually started putting on 10 pounds, not even thinking about the cortisol spiking because of lack of sleep.

  10. i stoped intake cakes chips breads only rye dark 40 grams w breakfast and i loosing my midsection 👌yup i did increases my proteins but i dont kill me w exercise just yoga and walking i do exercise by kitchen sink 😊👌🎉love your honesty thank You !!!

  11. I’m gonna be 59 in June and I have been fighting the menopause belly, but one thing that I noticed that I added several months ago to my supplement regimen is berberine… It has really helped to reduce bloating and inflammation, and I can fit into my little shorts that I was having a lot of difficulty doing several months ago. I also take turmeric. And cutting out if not drastically reducing my sugar intake i.e. cookies, cake,, baking, a lot of goodies! These small additions and changes have helped me significantly! Still fighting my Meno belly battles, but it’s been a much better fight.

  12. I think YouTube is a magnet for an adhd person. I’d love some supplement/ nutrition tips to help stay focused. I’d love to “stay on task”. I bet that feels awesome.

  13. Yes – I’m neurodivergent! As for the belly fat – excellent and helpful video! For me, I have been a lifelong exerciser and fit/thin for most of my life, but at age 50, belly fat began to appear, and I immediately stopped eating ultra-processed foods and added sugar, and that worked. Yes, I take HRT, but that did not prevent/stop the belly fat, eating a whole-food diet is what woked for me. I’m now 56 with NO belly fat. 😊
