“My father could have been a great comedian but he didn't believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant and when I was 12 years old he was let go from that safe job, and our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father. Not the least of which was that: You can fail at what you don't want. So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.” ― Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey, Canadian-born and a U.S. citizen since 2004, is an actor and producer famous for his rubbery body movements and flexible facial expressions. The two-time Golden Globe-winner rose to fame as a cast member of the Fox sketch comedy In Living Color (1990) but leading roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), Dumb and Dumber (1994) and The Mask (1994) established him as a bankable comedy actor.

  • MotivationHub says:

“So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it. I’m saying, I’m the proof that you can ask the universe for it.” – Jim Carrey

    • Jeff Da Barber says:

      Truth

    • NissanR33Ztune says:

nicely said – ask the universe for it…. she is an interesting creature and enjoys a game but in the end she looks after you …… no matter what she will always be there before us and after us shes enjoyable to be part off.

    • BahakDean says:

“So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossible out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it.”

    • pats4dawin says:

love the enthusiasm but how bout realism!!! maybe 2 percent will be where he is!! get real people!! yes iam gonna be an astronaut guys and i identify as a space man, so iam a space man!!

    • Maul says:

Ask the universe it won’t answer ask God He Will answer

  • IT'S IVAN says:

“You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance at doing what you love” 0:22 damn this instantly shot through me

    • tallcat55 says:

Yea food for thought 4 sure

    • Not Yours says:

@Fred Wills he’s an extremely successful comedian that’s witnessed the truth via DMT. There are other people in other professions who pretty much say the same thing. Failing is part of the learning process. Continuing to fail at something you love rather than something you don’t enjoy will lead you to where you actually want to end up. This thought process is more for ‘dreamers’ rather than ‘sheep’

    • podster12II says:

      Same.

    • Michael Crockett says:

@Fred Wills the best teacher is failing first, then evaluating your mistakes.
Failing doesn’t make you a failure, unless you stop trying. It’s getting back up that proves you’re not a failure!

  • Chitown Box'Office says:

Jim Carrey was always deep, the world just wasn’t listening.

  • Andrew Guerrero Jr. says:

“So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality” Jim Carrey

  • Natedog1976 N says:

He had me in tears the whole speech. I find it sad that I got caught up living life and making choices based out of fear. I thought I was being strong by living life and not worrying about how unhappy I am. Just doing what I thought was the next practical choice. Living like this led me to such unhappiness, I gave up. Fear had led me to try ending my own life. When that did not work I started using drugs. For who ever this may help, I made choices and lived for fear. It almost led me to my own death. Today I try to make choices out of love for myself and the people around me. Scariest part about it, I didn’t realize how I was living my life until it was too late. I hope this helped someone. ❤️

    • j korff says:

Dude, this is a very cool speech. Keep showing up. Peace

    • Dries van Zyl says:

True liberty and joy only comes by Fearing God – a Consuming fire (Heb.12:25-29)
Heb.13:6 – The Lord is my Helper,
      I will not fear,
What can man do to me

    • Petrokeeno says:

Heartening you had used the element of love to overwhelm fear. Hope you are drug free now.

    • Juillet He says:

You can press reset button anytime you want! Hope you are back up and let your life live FOR you 🙏

    • MsTonton says:

@Juillet He Amen 🙏 So many of us make these mistakes guided by our insecure upbringing. We float through life instead of really thinking things through and making good decisions for ourselves. We just move through life aimlessly. And one day realize how truly unhappy we are with our lives and bad relationships etc. But the story doesn’t have to end there no matter what age you are! It’s never to late to reclaim your life and realize that you deserve something good and healthy and that you can contribute back to that ❤ ✌

  • Just tell the truth! says:

Jim Carrey has always been brilliant. Everyone alive needs to see this video!

  • James Null says:

Jim Carey sounds like one of the wisest men I have ever heard speak. The quote “fear is disguised as practicality” is a great quote, and “fear is writing the script that I’m not good enough” come from positions of wisdom and great security. Great vid. I’m gonna save this and listen to it every morning til’ I memorize it.

  • Lucinda McLaren says:

I wish I had heard this 60 years ago. If you are in high school or college or still in your 30’s, listen to this and take it to heart.

    • Dan White says:

Yes, this has applied to me. I have a family and well I was given an ultimatum that I had to make x or the wife was leaving. The fear of losing her and a potential future family caused me to self-doubt and I did not even try so they stopped my financial support. So choosing fear I lost it anyway. The point being its better to try and fail than not try at all. The same result will happen so chose to try.

  • Jam Jockey says:

Jim has always been my favorite actor. His sense of humor is just so freeing to watch and experience through him and it’s so I inspiring to see his transformation through out his life. Keep on inspiring, Mr. Carrey.

    • jim carrey says:

@Jam Jockey Hello thanks for your lovely comment and support much love

    • Paul Johnston says:

I don’t always love his comedy, but I’m always moved by his acting.

    • Brook Bowers says:

I have always been a fan of Mr. Carrey as well and worked real hard at ignoring all the crap that got reported as “news” about his private life, which people didn’t honor or respect enough to keep private. I just had faith that he is a great person who has impacted my life in such amazing ways before I even realized it. Humor has saved my life over and over.

My favorite though is how ALL IN he goes on life, acting, artwork, archeological digs of his own self, and commencement speeches apparently 🙂

Thanks for making the world a better place in your own way and for inspiring others to creatively use positivity and laughter to heal, expand our awareness, forgive (ourselves and others) and to face fear with eyes and ears open. Stare it down because once you see it for what it really is, or at least the source of the fear, you can reverse engineer it into something positive or dismantle it completely.

  • NextTYTReporter says:

Such an amazing person, and he really cares about people. This isn’t just an act to get people to follow him, this IS Jim Carrey.

  • R Mb says:

“Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world” – Amen to that.

  • Susan Moncada says:

“Hope goes through the fire, faith leaps over the fire.” Powerful words.

    • Anthony G says:

I didn’t get this one. Help

    • MUSKAN says:

@Anthony G it simply means if we have faith that is complete surrenderness and believing best to happen we can even surpass the adversities happily believing its meant for our betterment
While hope makes us feel miserable all the time

    • Matt L says:

Hope in things of this world leads to misery, but hope in God leads to eternal Joy, if we also put our faith in Him.

    • John Doe says:

@Anthony G Hope makes you believe it that makes you suffer COULD stop at some point in the future.

Faith makes you believe it WILL.

That usually means a whole world in difference about how much you’re ready to endure before giving up.

    • Juju Bean says:

Power in that statement? Enough to change your life in ways you only have previously dreamt of . Whatever we hold in our mind as truth on a consistent basis WILL manifest itself in our life ❤️🔥🔥🧬

  • andivlogs says:

“I think everybody should get rich and famous, and do everything they ever dreamed of, so they can see that it’s not the answer.” -Jim Carrey. Some people really need to hear this.

    • Bojan says:

Yes, I wanna get rich and famous, and do everything I ever dreamed of, whatever the price because you can’t live without money.-Fact!

    • Paz Amor says:

When people have achieved everything in life they usually say things like that, however the ones who are right now living in the slums they might think different.

    • Bojan says:

@Paz Amor 1% have achieved everything,99% have not and are in the slums.

    • Blue Skye says:

@Paz Amor Yes. You don’t see poor sick and homeless people giving TED Talks. 🙄

  • Gregg Chaffin says:

I always come back to this speech when I’m feeling doubtful in myself or when I’m at a crossroads

  • Caleb Smith says:

“To find real peace you have to let the armor go” I can’t describe with words how hard that hit me.

    • Ratana Un says:

What armor? If you are wearing an armor, you are safe, don’t let it go. Don’t so only when you reach your destination!
I do not have armor because I don’t know the f$@k it is!

    • Its Jameson says:

@Ratana Un armour is donned by us to avoid emotional pain, so I think Jim Carey is saying that while we are ‘protecting’ ourselves with the armour, we also become numb and apathetic to everyone else. Take off your armour because it’s braver to take your past trauma head on

  • Ryan Thompson says:

One of the smartest, most aspiring, inventive speech I have heard. You’re the king. You moved me.

  • Dr Kevorkian says:

He’s not only funny but he’s more intelligent than most know.

  • Gary Reid says:

To be in the audience as Jim Carrey is delivering this wisdom. It must’ve been as transformative as it was for Jim who had lived and prospered, not as a successful comedian and actor, but as a human being. He is simply saying, “Just be and the rest will follow or work itself out.”
A great human being Jim Carrey has become.

  • Earl Mcpherson says:

He’s deeper than what I thought he was. I’m sure his family is proud of him.

  • Wisdom Quotes says:

    That’s a great quote:
“Fear is going to be a player in your life, but you get to decide how much.” -Jim Carrey
