Most people still believe weight gain is simply about calories.

But if calorie restriction alone worked long-term, why do so many people struggle?

In this conversation, Dr. Jason Fung sits down with Julia from Ancestral Supplements to explore the hormonal model of weight gain, insulin, ultra-processed foods, and how modern eating patterns may influence metabolism.
Topics discussed:
• Why “calories in, calories out” may be incomplete
• Insulin as a key metabolic hormone
• How processed foods can affect hunger and satiety
• The difference between whole foods and refined foods
• Understanding insulin sensitivity
• The role of nutrient density in traditional diets
Weight regulation is complex and involves more than simple math. This discussion explores how hormones, food quality, and dietary patterns may play a role.
If you found this conversation helpful, consider sharing it with someone who may benefit from hearing it.

    1. He’s saying to eat less often ( intermittent fasting) and then focus on real foods. Fiber, protein and real food carbs in moderation.

  1. Dr. Fung, i am in desperate need of good advice. Just want to know if keto and IF are good for somebody with cirrhosis?
I have experienced the benefits of keto and IF in controlling my diabetes and weight. But just need a reassuring sentence from an expert on keto and IF. Because nobody is talking if it is good or bad in a cirrhosis condition except doctors who anyway think keto and IF are not good and that it should be avoided and every meal shud have atleast 50% crabs 🙄

    1. @lorenamcgovernI so believe in that, just that I’m not able to find a single authentic source quoting that. Unlike keto and IF for a healthy lifestyle and in type 2 diabetes and basic hypertension. But as you know cirrhosis, especially stage 2 , there is hardly a room for error.

    2. @Mr_India….Dr. Berg has some info on that. Also, look into essiac tea. That has helped my fatty liver. Try rubbing castor oil on your skin over your liver. I hope you will find whatever works for your liver to heal ❤

    3. Thanks @lorenamcgovern . Really appreciate your help. I follow Dr berg and Dr ekberg too. You are right Dr berg has a small 2 video on this. Everybody talks of liver health, how to keep it helathy or reverse early fatty liver stages. But cirrhosis is a different ball game. The error of margin is too small

  2. Hi Mr Fung how are you my dear you are absolutely right i am following you from 6 years i am 62 years old and I am completely fit thanks my dear ❤❤❤.

  3. Thank you Dr. Fung.
    Great information ℹ️
Have followed you for years. Still learning. Thanks

  4. Thanks again to Dr. Fung for the thoughtful discussion. Always great to explore how insulin, food quality, and nutrient density influence metabolic health.

  5. Big Pharma wants us sick. Big Food makes us sick. All subsidized by our government.
Modify SNAP to be SNAP for all – redeemable solely for unprocessed plants (fresh/frozen/canned/dried).
Phase out all farm subsidies and not subsidize GMO corn syrup / processed foods to make us ill to benefit big pharma.

  6. Exceptional doctor ! listening to Dr Fung just over a year ago I started fasting, cut carbs and got on a glp1, I have lost 175lb and weigh 175lb I am half the women I was and feel fantastic 😊

  7. To lose weight, you have to be in an energy deficit. At the end, it is about CALORIES IN, CALORIES OUT. There are no good or bad calories. There are healthy or unhealthy foods.
