“Life is a struggle and the potential for failure is ever present, but those who live in fear of failure, or hardship, or embarrassment will never achieve their potential. Without pushing your limits, without occasionally sliding down the rope headfirst, without daring greatly, you will never know what is truly possible in your life.”
― William H. McRaven

I am a Marine and always will be. Listening to the Admiral took me back to Parris Island where the training tested me to the limit and they tried punishing me to test my mettle to see if I had it to be a combat trained Marine. I couldn’t do things right at first and they made me do it over and over until I succeeded and got it. After 3 months of terrible mental and physical training I graduated as a Marine. It was the greatest and proudest day of my life and I am still a Marine at age 85.
Semper Phi Marine !
Thank you for your service.
God bless you and watch over you.
Thank you for your service marine.
God Bless you Marine

I did 10 years in the Navy and after being medically discharged, I missed the sense of purpose it gave me and being around people like this. What a treasure of a speech, I bookmarked it to listen to when I get wobbly. Thank you Admiral McRaven.
God bless you sir! Stay strong!
And thanks for your service.
Thank you for your service

Thank you for your service!
Powerful speech. “If you want to measure a person, don’t measure them by their height or strength. Measure them by the size of their heart”.
Heart, aka balls.
Awe men to that! IF your HEART IS IN IT, you’re GONNA WIN IT! Never GIVE UP HEART! We have NOTHING STRONGER in life to help us make it through. It’s “ALL ABOUT HEART, SOUL, SPIRIT, MIND & BODY BEING IN HARMONY!!!” IF we get this to become WORLD WIDE in measure and routine daily living… WE’LL MAKE IT!!!!! I KEEP MY HOPES & FAITH ALIVE & KICKIN!!! Stay well brother!
Kindly always, Nick
Amen
@Richard A Well said my good man ! Balls , A.K.A. Testicular Fortitude , is a necessity to move towards a better day 💯🔥
@The King’s Court Long live the Kings Court !! Well said . God Bless 💯
16 years in the Navy myself, 2 war zones, been feeling hopeless since getting out yet this video has once again inspired me to be that person I was while wearing the uniform. Don’t know about anyone else but I have no problem admitting to the fact I got a little teary eyed listing to this
Thank you for your service
@Korbinian Kaiser best thing I ever have done and most likely will be the best thing I ever do here on out
AMEN, BROTHER ❣️🙏🔥💯🇺🇸
@CDRhammond should I enlist?
Obey Jesus Christ or you will go to hell, turn to the Lord before its too late, if you don’t REPENT OF YOUR SINS then you will likewise perish in hell. All liars, fornicators, adulterers, idolaters, blasphemers, whoremongers, thieves, murderers, homosexuals, effeminate, etc, will not inherit the kingdom of God. Once you turn to the Lord, read the new testament in the bible, the gospels, to develop a relationship with God. God bless you all. Turn to Jesus, repent or perish, turn or burn.
Retired Infantryman and current LEO and I’ve made my stints in EMS and as a firefighter. Nothing ever rivaled a good NCO or officer telling you why you can in spite of everything telling you that you can’t. This is a gem that will always stand the test of time
I lost my Vietnam Navy Seal, last year. I shed tears while watching this. Now I know why he was the wonderful man he was. I Wish so much I had seen this before his death, somewhere in our years together, I could have loved him a little better, harder, if that were possible. Through tears, watching this, I thank God this popped up in my feed, and gave me one more look into the life of a Navy Seal, my Navy Seal. Thank you Admiral McRaven.

@wdshaver THANK YOU! WELCOME HOME!
That comment made me cry
And THANK YOU SIR, for your Service. I hated seeing how you guys were treated when you got home. It was disgraceful. You all deserved so much better. One of my closest friends was 1st Cav, did two Tours, 70, 71. You, Sir, are appreciated. 🇺🇲💪
That was an epic speech, and it gave me goosebumps. I’ve never been in the military, but these are the lessons I will follow.
I’ve never heard such dramatic music after someone said, “Make your bed.” (2:10)
Admiral thank you so much for this powerful speech. I was shown it a few weeks back and now it is a very special part of our graduation ceremony. I am a counselor at drug treatment facility in Fresno California. It is a place that serves men, men who have been to prison and jail who are hopeless and helpless but after I show this to them they have a new sense of self. Thank you again for sharing with us.
Admiral McRaven , I listened to you when I was 18 years old, getting ready to sign a contract with USMC to change my life forever. Now 7 years later, Im watching you again, to motivate me to continue and overcome my challenges in life both professionally and personally. Thank you for this amazing speech that has helped me out through my lowest of times.
God Bless you Marine ! Hoo-Rah !!! You got this whatever you are facing 🙂
Outstanding SIR ! I’m 73 years old,,this speech is soooooooo motivating ! My father was a tank commander in Patton’s 3rd Army in WW2,,he always motivated me ! I wish he could have seen this ! I have passed this on to my grandchildren, 23 and 21,,soo that they can see you don’t quit ! Thank you Sir !
I have watched this video many times and every single time, it gets to me and I almost break down in tears. By far the best motivational speech that there has been in a very, very long time. Thank you for your service sir. You are an inspiration to us all!
I absolutely loved this speech. My husband has passed but I remember telling me how being a marine made him the great man he was. I also have a son-in-law that was a Marine and to this day he follows so many of those learning to be special in each of these rules.
I found this speech a few years ago when I was at my absolute lowest losing to drugs and alcohol. I’m 14 months sober as of writing this and this speech was part of my recovery. The ten rules went on my wall and I started to live by them. I fought for my life back harder than I’ve ever done anything. If anyone is ever struggling, please don’t give up, you can overcome.
Awesome man, Keep The Fight Alive is the recovery society’s Motto that I was at, congrats on your 14 months I am on day 4 today, I’ve been in recovery for awhile but I struggled with a legal substance so I collected a year and took a year cake which was false so that brought a lot of shame in me and took me out, but you know it is possible to live a clean life, so keep up the good work man!!
This is awesome. Keep it up. Addiction is a very hard thing to over come & it can come roaring back out of the blue. Don’t give it an inch. As you say, NEVER GIVE UP. I know you can do it, you know it too. You should be proud, just don’t be arrogant.
God bless you. Journey on.
Keep up the fight 👍
God is working on u my friend
Love you. Proud of you. Good luck and hold the line.
If everyone knew the training these warriors go thru, they’d respect our boys.
It’s a special dedicated man to endure the horrors of learning to survive.
My brother Marine Recon, some of the inhumane things him, & the others accomplished was unbelievable. To say he’s my hero is an understatement. He saw war, looked our enemy in the eye.
Admiral McRaven is a blessing to many. I achieved success after I practiced the steps below.
Y’all need to know this. A well-known Podcast in the US taught me how the rich don’t teach how to achieve success. They Seek the ideas of Fin. Consultants to help grow their finance
To achieve success, a Financial Consultant is needed to achieve it. I engage in a variety of investments with the ideas of my consultant and have acquired great returns so far. ( the amount is confidential )
opportunity like this is a scarce commodity. There’s no limit to what you can achieve in life (including success) if you put your mind to it. I will partake in this. Luckily I stumble into this.
you deserve all the attention.
We all have different impressions of an approach that defines how we understand and act on it regardless of the truth.
My Dad was a USMC. As a young girl, I dreaded his military background. He was strict, dictated chores and was impossible to please. Now that I’m older, I appreciate what he was trying to instill in me. The world today is crap and getting worse. But I wake up ready for whatever comes my way. Hoo-rah !!!
major respects to your father! my dad was in the navy. though he probably didnt go through as much hard training as your father did, he is a brave man. im so proud of him, for not killing himself after he saw his friend’s head get blown off. he is still here today but i thank those who had died for our great nation. props to your dad. if he his still alive, tell him that an internet rando told him thank you for your service. and if he isnt of this world anymore, i will pray for him and all of our fallen heroes. my dad told me something, never, ever give up. i hope the rest of your life is full of happines and that you may push through the hardships you may face!
Hoo-Rah!!!
Before joining college, I would listen and play this while I cut the grass. This video is very important to me. This video made me believe in myself again and that there may be many things you endure in life that makes you feel afraid or impossible but never give up and never quit and believe in a future far more better than the one we have today. We all can make a difference.
This is one of the most powerful speech i have ever heard. I might not have been in the military myself. There is so much in this speech i can relate to, The struggle has been real both for me and the people around me, . I try my best to make it day by day, do i have the chance to help some people no matter how small the gesture might be i’ll try. Remember you are not alone Together we are stronger. Much love from Sweden ❤❤
The most profound and influential motivational speech in human history has left an indelible mark on countless lives.
