I agree with you, to get a definitive answer is to use the meter to see how different food affects your blood glucose level. I’ve done this long enough now that I only need to test twice a day unless I’m going to eat something different than my usual meals. I test when getting up in the morning and midpoint between the 2 meals a day. I only consume carbs that are low in count with my protein and fat.

Plants base food, = high insulin levels 😢

What your meter and your A1C tells you is very important. But it is not at all the only thing that matters for health and longevity. Your non-HDL cholesterol, or better your ApoB, your BMI, or better your waist to height ratio, your blood pressure all are very important. Also your cardiovascular fitness, best measured by VO2 max, and your strength are even more highly correlated to living longer and healthier.

26 years here since my diabetes diagnosis. I’ve read many books over the years from the library. I believe in getting both sides of the story. There’s more to it than numbers and studies though. We’re not all wired the same in terms of how we think through things. It’s hard for many if not most people to change their eating habits or beliefs in general. The vegans will just say = but Dr Atkins was fat! It might work in the short term but it’s unhealthy long term etc. Everyone can find some “expert” who they like who makes them believe they are doing the right thing. If you are an overweight type 2 the mist important thing to do is to eat less and lose weight regardless of which approach you take to accomplish it. My diagnosis is type 1 and I’m not seriously overweight. Many type 1’s though won’t even do Dr Bernstein’s plan. They will tell you that they just aren’t able and willing to live that way. He only eats protein and vegetables. He doesn’t eat grains or fruit. People are permanently affected by the mental associations that developed in childhood regarding the connection between eating “goodies” and enjoying life. Just some odds and ends after communicating with many diabetics over the years. Thee end

Very interesting comment. Agreed that it’s not black or white, especially if I look at my family members…

    • @1Thessalonians5.21 says:

      Both sides of the story:

Proverbs 18:17 (KJV) [He that is] first in his own cause [seemeth] just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.

This shows that one tale is good till another is told.

      1. He that speaks first will be sure to tell a straight story, and relate that only which makes for him, and put the best colour he can upon it, so that his cause shall appear good, whether it really be so or no.
      2. The plaintiff having done his evidence, it is fit that the defendant should be heard, should have leave to confront the witnesses and cross-examine them, and show the falsehood and fallacy of what has been alleged, which perhaps may make the matter appear quite otherwise than it did. We must therefore remember that we have two ears, to hear both sides before we give judgment.

My last lab work I asked my doctor to order a fasting insulin count, he had no problem doing it. My fasting insulin was 3.4.

  • @mystatinfreelife says:

At one time I found an on-line BMI calculator that had an age-based component to it. It gave you a nice chart showing “healthy” BMI by age, the idea being that they felt older people could have (slightly) higher BMI and still be considered healthy. They also asked about your diet when getting your data. At the end, it told me the best way to improve health was to stop eating low carb (my BMI was within the range they thought was very healthy.) So even simple BMI calculators can have biases built into them.

Dennis, I am a 55 yr old man, not a diabetic, but was heading towards it by being 25 lbs. overweight with an addiction to a high carb, processed food diet. I love your no nonsense, simple approach to diet and lifestyle, which I have incorporated. I agree with you about not getting hung up on whether meat is grass fed, etc. I love the two item meal idea and having a bullet proof coffee for breakfast. My energy is soaring and I have lost 14 lbs in 36 days. I want to be healthy, so I can take care of my family and do good work for the kingdom of God. You are a true blessing and a role model for me. Mike D.
